There is only (1) E85 outlet here in San Diego, Calif. I went there today to start my Geo Metro on its 30% blend and WOW culture shock: (1) unleaded regular is currently $2.359 here---E85 $3.031 (2) I was informed that I could only pump my purchase into a gas can without a "Cretification of Modification". So (sans gas can) I left. It is only about 12 miles to Pearson Ford (the only outlet) but I was very upset with either my current State of residence or the OAO outlet for The fuel. Back to my original question---What have I gotten myself into?? All replies appreciated. |

Looks like that site is trying to price gouge the local market as they effectively have no competition. I paid $1.94 a gallon for E85 just a few days ago here in Denver so there is no legitimate reason for that price difference other than malicious intent or stupidity.
As far as the pumping in a can, that has to either be a local station policy or being pushed down on them by California emissions enforcement folks.
Did you ask permission or for information about where the pump was ?
When I first started pumping E85 I would get "lectures" about it as the station people are trying to cover their butt if there are any problems, if you just pull up and pump, I've never had anyone say a thing.

Don't ask, Don't tell...
Or you can grab an E85 sticker and slap it on your gas cap cover and point to it if someone gives you grief. |

Somebody checked on you filling up?? Thats odd, here in the south we might shoot someone walking up on us at the pump. Just kidding, no hate mail please. I had this happen when I owned a CRD Jeep Liberty Diesel. Everytime I pulled up to the Diesel Pump people would come running out of the station yelling for me to stop. But they never refused me fuel. Do like the guy above said, get an E-85 sticker and stick it to your fuel cap.

Regulations governing consumers include:
-using an approved (taxed) motor vehicle fuel (e.g.: no kerosene in your diesel)
-not tampering with the fuel or emissions system
Your car owner's manual may instruct you to use 93 octane fuel, but there is nothing illegal about using 87 octane (or even adding some diesel fuel). It may void your warranty, wreck you engine, and produce horrible emissions while the engine lasts, but it's not illegal.
Emissions regulations state that the vehicle has been tested with a particular fuel, and that it is not permissible to modify the vehicle to use another fuel. But I don't believe that even emissions regulations prevent you from using a sub-optimal fuel; nor do they prevent you from driving in a manner that would produce unwanted emissions.
I'd guess that the filling station believes that they may be the plaintiff in a lawsuit unless they perform some due diligence to prevent non-FFVs from filling-up on E-85. |

Colorado Springs used to be priced at that, with denver priced at a whopping 1.99.
Naturally I went down to denver to fill up and saved 5 bucks counting travel gas
But I still got lazy sometimes and filled up here as well. Also while dealing with this I contacted the local media and pointed them at Denver cost vs Colorado Springs cost and let them know there might be a story there. Never got a reply from the newsguys, but I did notice the price dropping. It might be because of increased usage so storage costs are cheaper, it might be reporter heat, might be better deal with a supplier, or it could be they were sick of getting letters saying "How come you charge a dollar more then a place 70 miles away?"
Point is, Research both costs in the state and the organizational structure of the company. Find out who prices it and if they make a profit, then ig it's not kosher, Start spreading the news. If they decide to try to punish you by stop selling it, the hype you generate by calling them on price gouging will probably encourage someone else to open a store. Or you could bring hard numbers to a store that can make choices of picking their own gas and convince them to start up E-85 priced reasonably. Put alot of effort into it, and you'll get what you want.
*Edit* By the way, E85 at Acorn in Colorado Springs is currently priced at 2.039$ a gallon. |

| When I first filled up with e85 (I drive a converted 98 mountaineer v8 5.0) there was a guy with a factory taurus ffv fillin up and he just kinda gave me this puzzled look. Kinda funny. |

I would bet someone filled on E-85 and tried to sue that station for repairs. Prolly a bit gun-shy. I have filled up gas cans already and added a quart of drop oil to 5 gal and run it in my lawn mower |

good for you, i have yet to find a fuel station with sufficient ethanol % in quebec ... just a little ethanol actually makes the engine really spirited if this is what you're talking about culture shock ... i guess you were talking about the culture shock from san diego, but it ain't really a culture shock compared to a 16 yrs old kid in an eastern europe country lol
i guess i should just build my own ethanol plant, it will take less time than the government of canada :likediss: |
