I've done something like that "fuel squirter" to test whether a friend's fuel pump was malfunctioning.

On my motorcycle, I had wondered about doing something like that; for example, hook the "reserve" fuel line to an 8 oz. auxilliary fuel tank. However, the carb float bowls have enough fuel in them to run the engine for several minutes, so I would have to switch to gasoline a minute before shutting-down the engine.

I sometimes use propane to help start it in winter . I have been thinking that it would be easier to take a 2oz butane cylinder, and run a tube to the air intake; then push the valve on the butane cylinder for ten seconds before starting.

These kinds of measures are probably not needed for a well-tuned water-cooled engine. But my bike has a very old air-cooled engine design, and can be a bit cranky when cold.

My fuel mileage is pretty poor in winter: the air-cooled engine never comes up to temp at all (I can rest my hands on the block fins comfortably), and ethanol likes a nice toasty engine. I've wondered about preheating the fuel, but I don't have a coolant system to scavenge heat from; just the exaust headers, which are a bit dangerous to work with.
