|
|
Hi guys!
I read about Ethanol about two days ago and I wonder if I could mix it with usual gasoline. Well, of course. But how much percent Ethanol should my car take without damage?
I ask you because we german folks still have nearly none experiences with this stuff. No gas stations for Ethanol. Practically no car on the street that is officially compatible. (Like this in whole Europe - except of Sweden)
Maybe you could tell me some interesting information about this. Especially because I am one of the handful Euros driving an american car.
Sadly I can't test the "Ethanol-Limit" of my car myself right now because it spents winter time - as always - in the garage. And I even still didn't find a source for cheap Ethanol. You better don't ask what they wanted me to pay...
Okay... does anybody know some information for Ethanol-mixes in a 1991 Pontiac Firebird V6 (189cui/3,1l)? Official stuff? Something based on experiences?
Maybe you guys across the pond have some kind of available kits / packages to make this car officially compatible to E85?

I would be a bit more cautious with using alot of E85 with this model vehicle, in part because the fuel rail I believe is only aluminum and is not anodized and may corrode internally from excessive/longer term use with higher percentages of alcohol. These also usually have rochester sourced injectors that had a rather high failure rate to begin with having shorted windings after use with even plain fuel/ E10 blends. I am not trying to scare u away from it's use, just giving fair warning as to what I have
experienced in the past. It may pay to update to better aftermarket injectors as yours wear out/fail with better parts from bosch, denso, etc.
Also should ck on fuel rail composition. Good Luck!! |

As Long as the vehicle is fuel-injected you should be able to run a 30%ethanol 70%gas depending on how cold it is. We run E85 in all of our personal vehicles none of which are FFV with much sucess. You will get some better mileage with some computer reprogramming. There are no E-proms for that vehicle that I know of at this time. We should have one on the market by the end of this year. Watch for our website it should be launched in February. _________________ Albuquerque Auto Tech

I am also from Germany and I drive an unchanged Mercedes C 200 K about six month with different percentage ethanol in gasoline. I start with 10 % and now I am at 50 % (E50). When I take more, there are often problems, so that the motor runs not with normal might. But when I take a special gasoline like pentane to ethanol, so I can drive also in winter with about E85. But I know that not everybody can buy this special Pentane to an low price. This gasoline has a very low flash point from -49 °C and can compense partly the very high flash point from ethanol, which is + 12°C.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentane
When it is warmer I can drive with E60 without no problems.
Now we have in Germany several gas station, which have E85 or E50:

We have had some cold start issues here to. But it does not get that cold here, rarley below 30. Once the car is started and ran for 30 seconds everything is fine. How does the pentane affect your gas mileage? _________________ Albuquerque Auto Tech
