|
| I am wanting to make the switch over to E85 with my 2004 Dodge Stratus. It is equiped from the factory to run E85 but I am getting conflicting messages from my dealer and my owners manual. The owners manual says to use only Mopar 5W-30 FFV oil or equivalent matching manufacturers standard "MS-9214". The dealer says any oil is fine. Who is right? What do I need to use? I don't want to void my warrenty, but I also don't want to pay through the nose for "special oil" if it isn't needed. Thanks! |

| Quote: | When operating a vehicle on M-85 fuel either full or part time, use of a specific flexible fuel engine oil such as Chryslers MS-9214 or equivalent if necessary. Equivalent oils may be labeled Multi-Fuel, Variable Fuel, Flexible Fuel ect. These engine oils may be satisfactory if met with the Chrysler standards.

I think the key sentence here, Equivalent oils may be labeled Multi-Fuel, Variable Fuel, Flexible Fuel ect. These engine oils may be satisfactory if met with the Chrysler standards.
I would check out the small print on some oil containers to see if you find similar language.
I found this response in one web forum run by the Department of Energy:

Although DaimlerChrysler has made E85 FFVs since 1998, they have yet to drop the 'special oil' requirement. One might ask why all the other manufacturers have, yet Chrysler has been unable to. Personally, I know of one large state fleet (~1300 FFVs) and one large federal fleet (~700 FFVs) that use ONLY standard oil in all of their FFVs and have for several years without incident. In fact, one of these fleets uses re-refined oil in all of its engines. One company rep told me to "use the special oil if you use E85 100% of the time, but don't worry about it if you use some of the time." [[How is a service tech supposed to know how often you use it? It is my personal belief this is a simple warranty issue that Chrysler has been unwilling to drop. I doubt many of the thousands of Chrysler minivans are using the special oil. |

| I had my oil changed at a local garage I use. The oil cost me $0.90 more than the standard oil for all 5 quarts. I have run over 600 miles with E85 and my mileage is averaging about 20.5 mpg versus about 24 with regular unleaded. So far so good... |
