What's the best way to go about cleaning out a gas tank before switching to e85? I can pull the pump fairly easily, but I'd rather not drop it out of the car...
It's empty right now, so I was thinking filling it up with 5 gallons of E85, letting it sit for a few days, then pumping back out with a hand pump... |

That method probably won't free up much of the "gunk" as the car isn't in motion, nor is the tank contents being shaken about.
Honestly you're probably best off to just drive the car around a bit, and change the fuel filter frequently for the first few thousand miles until you're comfortable you've probably dislodged any deposits from the tank. _________________ '99 Mustang GT, Vortech Supercharged, now running E85 full time.

what makes you think the tank is dirty? I have saw very few tanks needing any cleaning ulesss they had sit for a lot years, I would go with just trying it and change the filter.

I honestly don't know if it's dirty or not...I just figured that if it is, hopefully I could speed the cleaning process along...
It was a daily driver for a long time, then this past year was only driven to/from autocrosses. It's sat in the garage and hasn't run since October, and I think it has about a 1/4 tank of gas in it right now... |

It does not take high ethanol concentration to begin cleaning the fuel tank.
Do you live in an area where they use ethanol at low concentrations already? If you do the chance of varnish build up in the tank and lines is very small.
Unless the car is 10-15 years old I would not worry about it.
Just buy a spare fuel filter, and throw 1 or 2 gallons of E85 in a full tank of fresh gasoline. If you see no problems then increase the E85 content.
If you start to get stumbling or other signs of fuel delivery problems change out the filter with your spare, and you should be good to go.
