What modifications would need to be made in a 40 year old six cylinder gas engine? From reading some of the other postings I guess that one would start by messing with the load screw on the carb and possibly having to put in a bigger jet. Any issues with timing? I often hear that the alcohol will eat all the rubber or plastic in the lines or carb. Is that true or an urban legend?

On a 1960's vintage carburator, gaskets may be an issue. The old rubberized cork type gaskets did not like ethanol much. Same goes for older fuel lines and the needle and seat materials on some of the older carburators did not do well with ethanol.

You would have to take it apart and see what is in there. If the carburator is a die cast zinc carburator that could also be a problem.

If possible it might be easier to find a more modern automotive carburator to put on it, or simply try it and watch for problems and fix them as they show up.

You might want to touch base with the manufacturer and see if a newer carburator rebuild kit is available that is suitable for a 10% ethanol mix.

Keep the fuel fresh in this engine- as it would not be as sealed a system as many of todays cars and you are likely to leave it set more than a daily driver.

This would'nt be a 656 IH would it??

No, it's actually a 303 engine in a Deere combine.
In my line of work I talk to a lot of people who run older tractors, especially two cylinder Deeres. I think that some of them would like to know what they would need to do to run E 85.
