No concern about this at all. Are ethanol plants close to break-even right now after 2 good quarters?- Yes. Other than a too small to be competitive older inefficient 20 mil gal plant in Minnesota,--I have heard nothing. Rumors come- rumors go, and they can start as simply as this- someone drives by one and does not see condensation clouds coming off the cooling towers and assume it is down because last winter you could barely see the plant- but this is because there are no vapor clouds generated in the summer. Will some shut down periodically- YES- that is because there is constant updating, repairs, and cleaning going on right now. You cannot shut down a plant all the way in winter to do this work or you will freeze water lines and damage millions of $ of equip. Because of that April/May is the big period for temporary shut-downs. The same is true for oil refineries- spring and early summer or early fall is a common "turnaround time" for all but the ones in the very deep south.
Don't worry- be happy |

I don't have any inside info, but think about this.
Right now, a large percentage of the gasoline sold in the USA is 10% ethanol. They still have to make that, so that is a lot of demand and that will grow as more and more locations are required to use it (clean air). Also, some groups are pushing to make that 12%, so that will require more production. So I am not worried about "ethanol going away".
I do have some concern that high percentage fuel ethanol (like E85), may not grow. I hope it does, but this is not a slam dunk. IMO, if the ethanol lobby (including education), would push more for high percentage fuel ethanol, then the 10-12, or even 15% mix with gasoline will take care of itself.
If E85 becomes more widely available, then the automakers will design cars to take advantage of high percentage fuels, not just be able to run them like current flex fuel vechiles. They are not designed for ethanol, they are designed for low octane gasoline and the fuel system is "flexible" enough to run E85 in a gasoline engine (not an ethanol designed engine). There is a little bit of "what comes first, the chicken or the egg", but I believe in E85 designed engines, not E20 etc. |

The Verasun ethanol plant in Dyersville closed in late 2008. A Lincolnway plant was just fined this month for pollution, but not closed to my knowledge.
Our community recently had two new E85 pumps added- and I was just in Des Moines this week and saw quite a few more than I remember being there. Prices ranged from $1.86-$2.11, E10 from $2.65-$2.78. |
