Hi,
This has probably been discussed before...
I drive a 1985 Toyota pickup Long Bed, 5spd, 22R. IT is not fuel injected. I see this E85 at the pumps and want to try it, but have heard conflicting stories about compatability with o-rings and fuel tanks. As frequently as possible, I run 5% or maybe 10% ethanol and the truck runs good with it. With 8.5 gallons of 93 octane and a bottle of Outlaw octane booster, I drove over 300 miles in this truck. With the price of gas and the obvious price difference in E85 and my desire to experiment with everyhting I can get my hands on, I am tempted to use this stuff.
Do you think I will be able to run this stuff? Should I rebuild my carburetor with new O-rings that are made of a plastic that can tolerate alcohol? should I experiment? Or, should I enjoy the gas miliage I already have?
Do you think I will see better power or gas miliage? Will it burn hotter or cooler? I have heard both. Will I need more cmpression? Will water injection work well? I have heard that you can have very nice power and gas miliage boosts with water injection running at 5% water and 95% gas.

Hi,
Not sure how much ethanol you can use on your vehicle without modifying it... but if you are willing to experiment try blending e85 with e10 or reg unleaded to get ethanol blends up to e20...
If your vehicle runs on that or even e30... I'd stick to that and not try running 100% E85.
The questions about your Fuel System are good ones... I've tried finding info. about real life studies on the effect of e85 on Fuel System parts on non-FFV vehicles.
Most state modern vehicles (96 to present) tend to adjust to running e20-e30 OK... but they don't look at the effect on the Fuel System.
Check some of the other threads on this forum about Carb conversion to e85 for possible tips you may want to consider.
Best of Luck. If E20-30 doesn't work well... just add more gasoline till it does... |

I drive Mercedes C 200 K and took inside about 50 % Ethanol. The car started good, but the motor had no good might, often also when the motor was hot.
So i take 30 % inside and have no more problems mit my car. A friend from me take 20 % in his car and had also no problems.
I know now, that for much more ethanol must be increased the gasoline pressure, for inject more in the motor, because the motor needs from ethanol about 30 % more than from gasoline.

I am running 1.1 gallons of E85 and 9 gallons of 93 octane Gasoline. the truck is lively and runs very good. I was barely on the gas and was doing over 70MPH with the effort I have in the past done 50-60MPH.
This is the beggining of Test trial 1 of my experimentation with E85. I will record my experimentation and data here. In the future, I plan to record my gas miliage, performance, and other aspects while increasing the ammount of Ethanol I emplement. I would like to get to a ratio of 8 gallons of premium and 4 gallons of E85.
I wonder how the truck would do with 4 gallons of Everclear in the tank and 8 gallons of premium. Then, it would be 33% alcohol. Does anyone know the proof of E85? I don't know why, but I think 180. I kinda pulled than number out of thin air, but it makes sense. |

Hi 22R,
Not sure if your vehicle actually needs all the octane you are giving it. If you don't normally need Premium then you shouldn't need it when using E85...
E85 will boost the octane levels of your existing fuel. Just a tip to try and save at the pump. Only buy gasoline with the octane needed to prevent knock.
With that said I'm very interested in your e85 experiment. What type of truck are you testing?
Isn't "Everclear" 200 proof (pure) ethanol? In my opinion you don't want to put PURE ethanol into either a e85 OR non-FFV vehicle since it may damage the Fuel System... That could be said about anything above 10% too, but it is at least diluted... |
