would it be a good idea to install a lean out valve when going to E85 for the cool days to get heat i the motor? _________________ 72 camaro

Depends on your situation. What sort of setup are you talking about, a pure racing vehicle or a street vehicle?
If a street vehicle I would just put a proper thermostat in it to ensure it warms up properly. Perhaps install a bypass valve that allows the coolant to go around the thermostat so you could cool the engine down when ever you wanted by opening the bypass.
Racing only ---- Mmmmm perhaps but I would be worried that someone would accidentally leave the switch in lean mode or it would fail to close properly and you'd burn a piston.
In a racing situation I would prefer a block heater and a portable generator to get the engine up to a good operating temp. The other option would be to completely block the radiator with a piece of tarp held in place so there is no chance you would run without taking it off.
If I did a lean out valve I would have a great big idiot light showing the valve was open where the driver could not miss it.

In my opinion no. Its better to leave the carb tune alone and use a thermostat and an electric fan that is on a thermostat.
If you get the tuneup right an E85 carb will be lean enough to build heat at part throttle and rich enough to be happy and fast going down the track. _________________ E85 racer and E85 carb builder

In a RACING situation you can use a very simple and easy to install 3/8 ball valve mounted on your colum, blumbed to carb vac port, spacer or drill and tap the back of manifold for a 3/8 barb to use for a vac source.
This should help get the motor to temp quicker in cold air and if you should forget to close it at full throttle, a vac leak that close to carb would not lean motor. This works for me in the late fall in Buffalo when air temp is in the forties. Hope this is of some help. Ron _________________ ron |
