I've got a 1986 Mazda RX7 i'd like to see if i can run on at least part ethanol. (they're building a plant in lakeland FL and some local stations are supposed to get E85 pumps)
Im aware i might have to change fuel injector o-rings, fuel pump and fuel lines. I'll be getting a programmable ECU once they finish testing on the N/A verison (Rtek7 2.0 chip) These cars have a nasty habit of running pretty rich to begin with.
But this concerns me: Ethanol will wash engine oil off engine components. Mazda's rotary engine uses a metering oil injection system which injects engine oil to lubricate the rotors and rotor housings. Many people just disable this system and use a pre-mix 2-stroke oil with gasoline. (especially when building race rotary engines)
Can you use a 2-stroke oil with ethanol? Does anyone make a specific kind?
Any ideas? It doesnt seem like anyone has tried this before. |

I don't believe that ethanol "washes off" oil from chamber walls, but sort of the opposite: I think that once ethanol gets on cylinder walls, it can prevent oil from coating them. Mineral oil and E-85 don't mix (they separate).
I have had gasoline contamination of oil, and also E-85 contamination. The gasoline-contaminated oil was a murky, stinky mix; the E-85-contaminated oil separated in the pan.
A vegetable oil (like castor oil), or many synthetic oils do not have this problem. You may want to run Amsoil or Mobil 1. |
