Can someone quote me some prices on E-85. I live in WVA and cannot purchase it anywhere around here.
I use Sunoco which is actually E-10, and it runs fine and I get slightly better mileage. _________________ Duane Combs |

Last time I was in Columbus, probably your nearest station, it was about par with unleaded. I run an FFV Ranger and it gets about 16mpg on E85, vs. about 21 on unleaded. I need E85 to be a good 50c cheaper for it to be economical, for me.
It sure seems to run better on E85, though.
Where are you in WV? There's a station in Morgantown, off the Westover exit off I-79. |

Here is a news article that addresses the problems with ethanol distribution outside of the midwest. I find it interesting that the ethanol mandates may actually cause a shortfall of ethanol in the States causing the price to go up. It seems counterproductive because as the article shows, people will not buy e85 if it is more expensive than gasoline. Unless of course the price of gas increases along the same lines. |

| the price in Council Bluffs, Iowa is $2.35 or about 30 cents above regular gas. What I want to know is when gas prices spiked why did E85 jump more? |

My understanding is it was due to a double whammy of related events.
1. E85 sales went up as fuel prices increased ---- results increased demand for ethanol both for immediate sale and future sales. This led to E85 suppliers "stocking up" for the increased demand, with everybody topping off tanks at the same time.
2. Feds set aside local fuel blending regulations following hurricane katrina to allow regional fuel sharing which would normally illegal.
3. Fuel refiners started buying more ethanol to blend with gasoline as an extender to compensate for reduced output from the gulf coast.
4. Fed regulations changed for Govt. users of FFV's and increased federal use of ethanol based fuels.
The last three dramatically increased demand on a fixed production volume, -- the result was strong upward pressure on fuel prices.
The unfortunate result of increased awareness of E85 and ethanol based fuels led to precisely the worst result to promote ethanol sales ie loss of the price advantage it normally holds over gasoline.
As more plants come on line and we develop a "reserve brewing capacity" for ethanol that sort of spike demand will be less intense but until ethanol can be shipped by pipeline effectively it is somewhat handicapped in responding quickly to these sorts of demand peaks.
Now if we could just get the fuel line owners to clean their pipes and eliminate water contamination issues, that would eliminate their excuse for not shipping fuel ethanol by pipe line.

| E85 has been hover around $1.55-$1.85 around Wisconsin the last few months. Too bad I don't have a vehicle that likes it much, this 93 350 suburban I don't think would live long on ethanol. |
