Hey all,
e85 newb here. i have been racing a 2004 Subaru STi in and around Toronto Canada, since well 2004 Smile racing in Solo 2 then Solo 1 and now Race Ontario Championships. I bought at the end of the season from Cali a 2008 Mitsubishi Evo X that used E85.

Now to the questions, i have found a place that will sell me E99-98 and i will be mixing it myself into E85. i was planing on mixing it with Shel 91, no add ethanol, but is nitrogen enriched. Will i have any problems with that?

Another is has anyone tried to mix pure ethanol with race gas, VP racing MS109, because i have a 1 1/2 drums of the stuff and i was just wondering what would happen?

cheers,
kyle

I see no problem with using the Shell 91- the ntitrogen enriched thing is not an issue- more of a gimmic in my mind. I do not know about the other additives in it and a few EVOs can get injector deposits from the gas additive portion ( as some of us believe).

I do not know the MS109 well- other than it is listed as unleaded (good) but also as an oxygenated fuel. I wonder if it would need an ever so slight tweak in AFR over the Shell 91 in the final E85 blend?

MS109 oxygen content is 4.5% by mass.

The MS 109 uses MTBE as the oxygenate. I suspect that it is used in fairly high concentrations (can you confirm Alcohol?) in order to achieve 4.5% O2.

Anyone know how MTBE affects the water E85 test? I wonder if MTBE separates out like the hydrocarbon content does.

Off the top of my head (so not super reliable LOL) is that MTBE was used up to 12% to provide 3.7% oxy. Do not take that as gospel- it do not have time right now to check.

I do not know how MTBE will do in water- while oil companies claimed it was less misicible in water- it was certainly an issue spreading throughout groundwater. However- I do not know if it was merely riding on top like gas or if it went into the water,

One way to find out would be to do the E10 phase separation test on the pure M109. In that test you take 100 ml of product and add 10 ml of water. (different than E85 test). Look for greater than 10 ml down under the gas- if there is more than 10 ml down there you know that the MTBE did in fact separate.

Water solubility 42000 mg.l-1 at 25°C (<10% in water, miscible with ethanol and diethyl ether)

it's miscible with ethanol, so it should be ok right?

Yes- but like I pointed out earlier- if you mix the same ratio of gas to ethanol, then the M109 might need a very slight tweek upwards in fuel to air as compared to 93 octane (unless the 93 is with 10% ethanol).
