What are you trying to accomplish with it? (ie valve guide lube or valve sticking to a soft seat?)
There were more than one aftermarket "lead substitute" I believe. I sold many gallons of the stuff for old farm tractors that lacked Stellite valves and hardened seats because they were made to run on leaded gas. We told them; 1) it is not needed if engine is not operated above 80% of rated load and 2) NEVER put in your car with a catalytic converter.
Alcohol does burn cooler than gas so exhaust valves sticking to seats should not be an issue unless your timing is retarded. I wonder too about the solubility of the additive in high ethanol blends. In some engines these additives can also cause spark plug deposits. In the old days the lead deposit formed a thin deposit on the valve stem and seat that cushioned the valve close and kept the metal of the seat from sticking to the valve and being lifted away. Stellite valves and hard valve seats cured this issue. By 1959 our Farmall 350 gas burner already had rotating stellite valves- long before lead disappeared. I am not aware of anyone using soft seats today and i would think especially not in racing where stiff springs would wear the valve into the seat badly.
Some automakers claim to use a different valve in an FFV (is this fluff to say they spent more or real?) -- I suppose they might have wanted a different material that could take the shock cooling of the alcohol getting sprayed directly on it by injection or perhaps due to a guide change but who knows- I do not see discussions of this need popping up anywhere.

Give us a bit more info on what engine and driving usage you are dealing with. The question is too open ended for any useful answer to be given.
We might assume you are asking about the same setup in this thread:

| sorry guys I should of put more info up. Yes it would be cause the seats are not hardened. It is strickly a race car. We have put 6 passes on it already without it. The motor is a stock 340. stock heads. .484 lift hyd. cam. 1 3/4 headers, victor 340 single plane intake. in a 2900 lb car w/driver. 727 with tranny brake. Thanks again. |

What year were the heads made or worked on last? You would have to look harder to find a set that didn't have hardened valve seats already, I would think. _________________ Can't leave well enough alone? Neither can we.
